My Religious Life

My time for the last few weeks and months has been spent in writing a book about my life.  This has taken me deep into who I came from, how that affected my life, and how much richer my life is because of this journey through my grandparents and parents’ lives.  Spirit led me on a journey of my religious life that I didn’t even know I wanted to take, but which opened me to the greater value of my lineage as a foundation to my life.

My Grandmother on my Mother’s side joined the United Brethren Church when she was a child and then the Christian Church when she was an adult.  Her obituary states:  She lived a devoted Christian life and was a most faithful and courageous mother, rearing her family in the fear and love of God.  She leaves behind her a splendid Christian family and a host of loving friends who will miss her greatly.  From what I can gather, my Grandfather attended with her during his short life.

My Grandparents on my Father’s side were Lutherans who immigrated from Germany.  They were religious people attending church every Sunday and doing much work in the church.

My Father joined the Christian Church after he and Mother married, and they raised us in this faith.  My Father was a Deacon, an Elder, took flowers and communion to those homebound, visited members in hospitals and at home who were ill, and helped in any way he could.  Mother was involved in the youth groups, new member welcoming, choir, preparing food for ill church members, or for group functions, and served on other committees.  They put their hearts and souls in being sustaining church members, in personal support of the minister(s) and ministerial staff, and donated money.

These beautiful, dedicated people were the way showers for me with their deep love of God.  So, from this religious foundation, I built my life and expanded it into spirituality on all levels.  Church was the first place I looked when I moved to a new place, as I knew my soul would be welcome there.  It was a social and family place as well as a spiritual place.  Spirit blessed me with a solid religious foundation, then guided me to use that as a launch for my life wherever I went.

It was a place of security, of warm fellowship, of involvement on a deeper level, of tradition and ceremony.  It was a place that made my heart sing, no matter how small or large the congregation, what message was given, no matter how involved or non-involved I became; it was a place for my soul to rest and be renewed.  It was a home away from home. Spirit taking me step-by-step to my own sacred center.

My explorations went into most of the world religions, formal and pagan, with the result that all were similar in many aspects with love as a top priority.  This paved the way for me to honor all religions, all ways of acknowledging God, Source, or whatever anyone calls the Divine Presence in each of us.  It anchored me in trusting Spirit and knowing that which flows through me is exquisite and life enriching.

Reggie is such a fun little spirit.  He meditates with me and goes out to other realms when I do.  He takes a deep breath, sighs, then becomes still.  He, too, loves to connect with Spirit and be in a state of bliss.  He comes back from that state so mellow and loving; his energy has softened.  We give great thanks to the ancestors who paved the way for us to connect with Spirit, and to Spirit for guiding us to be more and more open.  Nancy and Reggie♥

Enjoy Yourself

The other morning, I was awakened with the song Enjoy Yourself. The words of the chorus went as follows:

Enjoy Yourself (It’s Later Than You Think)
by Guy Lombardo

Enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think
Enjoy yourself, while you’re still in the pink
The years go by, as quickly as a wink
Enjoy yourself, enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think

I thought that was a rather profound message for me. I thought I had been doing that right along, but it was clear to me that there is a large part of my day that I focus on work, even though I consider it play. I dearly love to write so I will get on the computer and type away enjoying myself immensely. Then I realize it is past time to eat lunch, Reggie is fussing with me, and I have been so engrossed in what I was doing, I did not pay attention to anything else. Spirit is calling me to maintain awareness of more than just writing, of time away from my computer, and of the necessity of just stopping to be.

Because I live by myself, have a house, and almost a quarter acre of land, I need to be doing much of the time as things do not take care of themselves. When I stop to just be, allowing myself to walk outside with nothing in my mind but just enjoying the smells of my winter garden, the soft breeze, the cool air, the cloudy sky, and the beautiful pansy, camellia and azaela blooms, a peace comes over me that relaxes all parts of me. I get the same feeling when I meditate, as I take myself from this realm to the realm of bliss infusing all aspects of me. Spirit is calling me home to be enfolded in bliss.

My Winter Garden

When I am finished with my walk or meditation, I am in a different place inside; a place of quiet joy, of surrender, and of knowing that each moment will be taken care of by Spirit. The grace of our connection fills my Beingness, soothes my life, and I go on in quiet joy within myself.

Enjoying myself is being with Spirit, with my precious Reggie, with family and friends, with the changes in my life, with my garden, my computer, and my magical spiritual connection. I know it is does not matter if it is later than I think, if I am in the pink, or if the years go by quickly as a wink, what matters is I know that Spirit is eternal within me.

Reggie on his walk at the park.

Reggie enjoys himself every moment as he is wide open to Spirit. He is full on running, barking, eating, peeing, pooping, sleeping, or letting me know he wants some loving. He does not worry about anything as long as I take care of his earthly needs. As a rescue dog, he knows Spirit will take care of him because Spirit found his forever home with me. We so enjoy ourselves! Nancy and Reggie♥

Mountain Trip

Late last year, I asked Spirit for more social activities in my life.  Ask and ye shall receive!  My friend from dance invited me to her house for lunch and I accepted as I thought it would be a nice experience.  She lives in the mountains southeast of Auburn.  It had been raining for two days, but the morning I went, it was not raining for which I was grateful.  I put the directions on the passenger seat so I would be able to reach them when I got closer.  I left an hour ahead of when I was supposed to be there, just in case I needed more time since I didn’t know where I was going.  There is little or no cell phone service in the mountains, so I knew I needed paper directions.  I took her directions and then took Map Quest directions also.  Spirit was guiding me to be as prepared as possible.

When I started out it was foggy in the valleys with clouds hanging low, but visibility clear.  It was a beautiful drive through the mountains with the fog and mist weaving its way through the trees and bushes, lightly touching the streams and lakes.  After a while, I passed an inn, the landmark for one more mile to the turnoff.  The turnoff was clearly marked and easy to follow.  I drove for two miles on a winding road with homes, cabins, or trailers tucked back in the trees, down in the draw by the stream, or up on the side of the hill.  Spirit taking me on an imaginary journey through the lives of those by the streams, roads, and pathways of the mountains.

Then I saw a number for a house that was past the number she had written down.  So, I turned around and went to the closest cabin on the road.  This cabin had dark old wood on the outside with a rusting RV sitting in the yard, a shed with old iron things heaped up in piles and overflowing out into the yard.  I walked up the rickety stairs to the porch that had a wooden chair with a can filled with cigarette butts by its leg.  A sign on the leaning screen door said “No Smoking – Oxygen in Use.”  Spirit giving me visions of scary movies I have seen.

I knocked on the door and was told to come in.  When I opened the door stepping just inside, I could hardly see or breathe for the smoke filling the room which was dark except for one fairly large television.  The very thin man was laying on the couch covered with a blanket.  I told him not to get up that I just needed to know how to get to the house number which I told him.  He got up, came over closer and told me he didn’t rightly know, said he had lived there for years, but didn’t know everyone anymore.  I thanked him as I backed out the door.  I made my way down the stairs and back in the car.  The thought crossed my mind that I was so grateful for my life and home.  Spirit guided me to send the man pure Divine Light for whatever he needed.  That was the purpose of the stop.

I decided to drive off on one of the gravel roads that had some numbers close to the one I was looking for.  This was a water-filled, rutted road that meandered back through the mountain.  It ended at a nice white house with cars and a pickup, so I got out and asked for directions.  The woman knew who I was going to see and said she was just over the hill; i.e., on the other side of the mountain from where we were standing.  She gave me good directions and told me that if I couldn’t find it to come back and she would take me there.  I told her how lovely that was, thanked her, and retraced my way back to the main road.  Spirit giving me a gracious kind woman to help me complete the journey.

I found the road I was to take and made my way one mile back in the mountains on the same water-rutted road, then drove up her driveway only two minutes late.  I said a quick prayer of gratitude for getting me there safely and almost on time.  She was standing on the step to her house when I opened the car door as she had been watching for me.  We hugged, she introduced me to her son then showed me around the house.  This was a mountain house with lots of beautiful wood around, a custom wood stove that was huge as it heated the whole house.  When she opened the double doors to toss in more wood, I was astounded at how large it was.  She had a garden room that was huge with windows along one wall where the sun came shining in from the south when it wasn’t cloudy.  She had so many Christmas Cactus that were in bloom, it was delightful to look at them.  There were red, white, peach, magenta, and a mix of colors that were just magnificent.  She had other plants and herbs there as well.  Spirit displaying the beautiful gardener’s heart that she possesses and that we share.

Her son and I were the same height and had spiritual interests which connected us in a quiet soul way.  She invited a fellow who works on the property to lunch.  She had prepared a feast, baked chicken with fresh rosemary and garlic, and one other kind of chicken which I did not taste, but looked delicious.  She made basmati rice and a mixture of fresh vegetables with a delicious sauce on the side if we wanted it.  She served me a Sleigh Ride Tea which was flavorful.  She served homemade cookies for dessert.  We all visited as we ate which was such a delight for all of us as we usually eat by ourselves.  Spirit nourishing our bodies and spirits in such a heartwarming, fulfilling beautiful way.

At the end of the meal, the fellow left for a bit and came back with a little jar of gold, gold crystals, and a sizable heart-shaped piece of pure gold that was breathtaking.  He was a gold miner and had been searching for gold for years and recently found the heart-shaped piece which he let me hold.  He found it in the river while he was scuba-diving for gold.  It held such a fine pristine vibration to it that flowed through my body while I was holding it.  We began visiting; he is intuitive, a Native American Shaman of the Cherokee Nation, and we had much joy in connecting on a spiritual level.  It came time for me to leave, so I hugged and thanked each of them for such a wonderful meal, visit, and sharing from our souls.  Spirit gifting me with new friends and heartfelt connections of humans, Spirit, and the Earth.

Reggie was waiting for me when I got home.  He wanted his gourmet dinner immediately after I loved on him.  Then he was content to spend the rest of the afternoon by my side until it was time for his afternoon walk.  He nudged me so I would get his walking vest and leash on so we could go to the parks, he could leave his mark, and greet his friends.  Spirit taking us each on an adventure and filling us with such joy at the new and the everyday.  We are so very blessed.  Nancy and Reggie♥
